I know I should use long socks when deadlifting, but I prefer wearing tights as I don’t feel comfortable in shorts. So that’s the result – signs and bruises every day after a leg day!

This picture was shot when I landed in Bergamo for WordCamp Milano last October, but trust me – nothing has changed since then, every leg day leaves me the same memories on my shins 😅

Fit-o-mattic at Automattic Grand Meetup

We have a Slack channel at Automattic where we talk about all the things fitness. There are a lot of coworkers who are passionate about fitness, however when heading to our annual meet up I wasn’t expecting people to actually show up at the gym.

The moment you do stretching in your balcony with 10C outside because it's late! 😱 #a8cgm Glad to see a lot of Automatticians working out and keeping active also in here. 💪🏻Working out and doing routines is more about being alone – something that doesn’t match 100% the spirit of a company meet up – staying all together as much as we can. We all work remotely so this Grand Meetup is the only time of the year where we’re all gathered together in the same place. And it lasts only 7 days!

I was so pleasantly surprised to see a lot of my coworkers coming over to the gym, even for a quick running or a HIIT routine just before breakfast. People can also go out for a proper run, playing tennis or doing yoga.

I chatted a bit with some of my colleagues I didn’t know in person, right in front of the smith machine, alternating each other during squat reps. It’s been particularly nice for me, as sport is very important for me and it had (and still has) a huge impact in my personal and professional development  :)

And then, I ended up rushing to my room to cool down after the routine. This is the moment when I did stretching in my balcony with 10C outside because I was tragically late for my second breakfast! 😱

I am so glad to see a lot of Automatticians working out and keeping active also in here. 💪🏻

Bikini progessions. Bikini progressions?

Last year I took a couple of days off after my wedding. I went to the beach and took one photo of myself. I couldn’t even image at that time that 13 months later I’d take pretty much the same picture with the same bikini!

How weird – it looks like it’s bikini progressions time!

So I found the two photos in my phone and got them together to compare them and check out how by body has changed over a year time.

Left picture is dated July 2015. Right picture is dated August 2016.

Can you spot any progression?

I can see better shredded shoulders and chest. I can also spot a bit of more skin in my belly on the left pic. I know I worked to make my abs more prominent over the last few months, though I don’t want it look like I have a bloated or fatty belly :(

I know I am very tough with myself, so I don’t see much progressions. On the contrary!

Famous legs

I’m the owner of a pair of famous legs! I went to have a massage and that’s what happened!

The little things in life are the ones that really made our day. I went to have a deep tissue sports massage as I felt my muscle tired and screaming for a bit of extra love. Rianne, lovely lady who massaged me, felt in love with my legs so much that she posted them on Instagram! ❤️

It’s not the first time that some parts of myself get viral on Instagram. Well, should I pivot from being a mystery and detective author to a fitness something on social media?

By far my favourite pair of legs to massage! As an ex sprinter who transitioned into weight training, I was expecting extremely tight hamstrings, glutes and quads, however… this lady has clearly looked after herself as there was hardly any muscle tightness! Simply through regular AND thorough stretching she has been able to continue to train at a high intensity and hold on to muscle, even with an unfortunate adductor injury. Teaches me for assuming!
Stretching is very underrate but I can not stress its importance and the benefits from it enough!

I can run! I finally did it!

I can run, running, happy, injury, recovery

I can run again, it’s official. I’ve just managed to run 10 minutes in a row on the treadmill for the first time in 4 years.

This celebration may look weird to someone who hasn’t followed my journey of endless chronic pain during the last few years, but the other day I really set a great milestone in my total recovery path.

In 2011 I went overtraining and seriously damaged the abductors of my right leg and consequently my whole core muscles. I couldn’t figure it out at the beginning so I wasted a lot of time trying to not think of the pain and keep training. Worst mistake of my life. The injury got so worse I could barely walk at some point.

Meanwhile I moved to the UK and started working at Decathlon, meaning walking for an average of 72km per week (!!!), which meant also no room of improvement for my poor leg and core.
At some point I also had a disgraceful plantar fasciitis on both my feet, which really pushed my mind and my body to the limits. That was when the NHS started treating me with a massive physiotherapy programme which I sometimes still do to keep everything under control.

After 1 year of therapies, structured physio, lots pf patience and strictly and controlled reintegration to the running (I started with 30 seconds running on the treadmill back in mid February, and adding 30 seconds every one or two weeks), I finally made it. I can run for 10 minutes in a row on a treadmill.

I’ve been dreaming this moment for nearly 4 years and finally it’s come. God knows how many times I stared at runners (indoor and outdoor) feeling so envy. I saw overweight people struggling on the treadmill and me – being 5kg undeweight – wishing to exchange their extra 10/15 kg with the possibility to run in their behalf.

Words cannot describe my feelings. I’m coming back stronger and more motivated than ever. My target is set to 20 minutes.

I beat my demons. Hopefully the worst is gone now.
